The Samsung Gravity 3 is an excellent slider phone for messaging fiends on T-Mobile. It's a near-clone of the Samsung Restore on Sprint, but T-Mobile's version improves the ergonomics and doesn't emphasize the green angle as much. The Gravity 3 is also a shrewd update to last year's already solid Gravity 2, as it adds 3G and roomier keyboards. As a result, the Gravity 3 is our new Editors' Choice for T-Mobile feature phones.

The Gravity 3 looks sharp and feels well-built. It measures 4.7 by 2.1 by 0.6 inches (HWD) and weighs 4.3 ounces. A dark chrome accent runs around the side, and electric blue plastic surrounds the keyboard. The back panel is made of a hard textured plastic with a matte finish. The 2.4-inch, 320-by-240 LCD is slightly brighter and larger than the Gravity 2's display. The four-row, slide-out QWERTY keyboard has recessed, oval-shaped, backlit keys with a soft-touch coating. The staggered layout looked a bit odd, but made it easy to type silently and quickly. Dialing numbers on the bubbled numeric keypad was also faster and more accurate than with the Restore's thinner keys. One small issue: When you slide out the QWERTY keyboard, the on-screen UI options no longer line up with the two programmable soft keys.

The Gravity 3 is a quad-band EDGE (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) and a dual-band HSDPA (1700/2100 MHz) device without Wi-Fi. T-Mobile has no 3G coverage in my area, so I tested the phone primarily in 2G mode. Voice quality was OK, with a decent amount of gain in the earpiece, and a slightly hollow sounding tone with too much upper midrange. Reception was average, and callers said I sounded fine. Calls sounded clear through an Aliph Jawbone Icon ($99, ) Bluetooth headset. The Nuance-powered voice dialing worked over Bluetooth without training. The speakerphone was too weak for anywhere louder than a quiet room indoors. Battery life was excellent at 11 hours and 27 minutes of talk time in EDGE mode.

As with the Gravity 2, T-Mobile chose an odd, circular menu for the Gravity 3's default setting. Switching to grid mode helped, although the nine wire-frame icons still looked cheap. Getting around was simple and fast using the five-way control pad—a much better choice than the Restore's inaccurate optical trackpad. The Access NetFront 3.5 browser delivered slow but accurate WAP and HTML pages. T-Mobile includes personal and Microsoft Exchange e-mail access, plus access to AIM, MSN, and Yahoo IM accounts (but not Google Talk). A "social buzz" app gives you integrated Facebook, Twitter and MySpace updates. The phone also syncs with PCs using Samsung PC Studio. In the past, we've found PC Studio to be buggy and difficult to use - so we wouldn't rely on it - but many other feature phones don't even offer a local syncing option at all.

TeleNav GPS Navigator offers voice-enabled, turn-by-turn directions for $10 per month; you can use the free, built-in Google Maps if you don't need voice prompts. The app took several minutes to lock onto routes and sounded a bit tinny, but it worked well as a stand-in for a PND. Unfortunately, you can't load non-T-Mobile-provided apps onto this phone, so Opera Mini and its ilk are out.

T-Mobile's plan pricing is quite reasonable, unlike AT&T or Verizon. If you're in a good T-Mobile coverage area and choose equivalent data features, you'll save hundreds over a two-year period. On the other hand, the phone's $49.99 price is only if you sign up for a $15 messaging and data plan or higher; otherwise the Gravity 3 costs $99.99. At least the plan isn't required, like it is with many AT&T and Verizon phones.

Multimedia, Camera, and Conclusions
The Gravity 3 has 70MB of free internal memory for ringtones, Java apps, and photos. Music isn't its strong point. My 16GB SanDisk card worked fine in the microSD card slot underneath the battery cover. MP3 and AAC tracks sounded bright and crisp over Motorola MotoROKR S9-HD ($129.99, ) Bluetooth headphones, with no background hiss. But the music player app chopped off the first few seconds of every track, and didn't display album art. If you want to avoid your music getting chopped, there's no dedicated headphone jack, so you'll need to find a microUSB-compatible set; alas, few of those will sound any good. 3GP video files played smoothly in full screen mode, but my MP4 and WMV files wouldn't load.

The 2-megapixel camera lacks a flash or auto-focus. Test photos were quite good, with vibrant color, a natural light balance, and solid resolution both indoors and out. Shutter speeds were about average; I lost an indoor photo or two to motion blur, but it wasn't bad. Video was pretty much out; the phone recorded useless 176-by-144-pixel thumbnail-sized files.

As long as you don't put a premium on music playback, the Gravity 3 nails the form factor, keyboards, GPS, and camera. If you'd rather have a touch screen than a numeric keypad, look at Samsung's Gravity T instead. T-Mobile users who want a plain phone without a QWERTY should shop for the flip Nokia 3711 (Free-$119.99, ), which works well for voice calls, music, and video playback. But we find the Gravity 3 the best all-around choice.

Android has a large community of developers writing applications ("apps") that extend the functionality of the devices. There are currently more than 250,000 apps available for Android. Android Market is the online app store run by Google, though apps can also be downloaded from third-party sites. Developers write primarily in the Java programming language, controlling the device via Google-developed Java libraries.

The unveiling of the Android distribution on 5 November 2007 was announced with the founding of the Open Handset Alliance, a consortium of 80 hardware, software, and telecom companies devoted to advancing open standards for mobile devices. Google released most of the Android code under the Apache License, a free software and open source license.

The Android open-source software stack consists of Java applications running on a Java-based, object-oriented application framework on top of Java core libraries running on a Dalvik virtual machine featuring JIT compilation. Libraries written in C include the surface manager, OpenCore media framework, SQLite relational database management system, OpenGL ES 2.0 3D graphics API, WebKit layout engine, SGL graphics engine, SSL, and Bionic libc.

By the end of 2011, a number of smartphone vendors will have placed some very big bets on their latest smartphones. If you subscribe to current rumors, Apple almost certainly plans to debut its iPhone 5 sometime in either September or October. Research In Motion just released a new slate of BlackBerry devices it will push aggressively to businesses and consumers. And Microsoft—hand in hand with Nokia and some other hardware manufacturers—will begin to make a second large drive for its Windows Phone platform.

A wide variety of manufacturers—including HTC and Samsung—will also continue to produce a few handsets loaded with Google Android.

Nobody can predict the future with certainty, and it would be a fool’s game to try and predict the various vendors’ precise market share a year from now. That being said, there’s enough data floating around to make some (relatively) educated guesses about the state of the market come 2012.

For the most part, analysts seem to think Apple will continue its robust sales run. “Apple has yet to top Nokia’s single-quarter volume record of 28.1 million units,” Ramon Llamas, an analyst with research firm IDC, wrote in an Aug. 4 note. “But given Apple’s momentum in the smartphone market, it may not be a question of whether Apple will beat that milestone, but when.”

Dual-core Android smart phones are all the rage at Mobile World Congress this year, but technology is moving on apace. Qualcomm just unveiled its next-generation Snapdragon chipset, which you can expect to see in devices sometime in 2012. How powerful is it? Quad-core.

Even the word sounds slightly rude. The APQ8064 uses a new micro-architecture code called Krait, which has been built for mobile devices. Qualcomm is promising speeds of up to 2.5GHz per core, while also cutting down on power consumption and heat generation.

Or, as the company puts it, "Twelve times the available performance as well as 75 per cent lower power than the first generation of Snapdragon processors." The results: smart phones with Duracell Bunny-style endurance and slimline looks. Count us excited about the HTC Desire 3 already...

Qualcomm also reckons the APQ8064 will power devices with bigger, higher-resolution screens, more complex operating systems, multi-channel audio, HD gaming and stereoscopic 3D photo and video shooting and playback. Oh, and by the way, it supports up to 20-megapixel cameras. Manufacturers get their hands on the chipset early next year.

Another reason to get excited about next-next generation Android devices is also being shown off on Qualcomm's MWC stand this year. A company called Oovoo is showing HD video chat for tablets, using the Snapdragon Mobile Development Platform (MDP). It'll also work on smart phones, but has been optimised for larger-screened devices.

Oovoo claims its tech can provide four times the video resolution of its current rivals, while cutting power consumption by half. In short, Apple's FaceTime is going to get some serious competition on Android devices, although if we're honest, we'd still like to see Android and iOS devices video-calling each other in HD, which is why apps like Skype may remain hugely popular.

Android smartphones are killing it, but you ain’t seeing nothing yet. According to research firm iSuppli, Android will be on more devices in 2012 than Apple’s iOS software. iSuppli’s forecast is based on these assumptions:

Android will be used in 75 million smart phones by 2012, up from 5 million in 2009. Meanwhile, iOS usage will amount to 62 million in 2012, up from 25 million in 2009.

Android’s share of the global smartphone operating system market will be an estimated 19.4 percent in 2012, up over 2.7 percent in 2009
Apple’s share of the global smartphone operating system market for iOS for iPhones will grow to an estimated 15.9 percent in 2012, up over 13.8 percent in 2009
Android’s share of global smartphone OS usage will rise to 22.9 percent, but iOS for iPhones will drop to 15.3 percent
iSuppli’s prediction came after Google’s CEO Eric Schmidt revealed that a whooping 200,000 Android handsets are being activated each day. The astonishing figure is a 25 percent increase over 160,000 activations back in July, which is up from 100,000 activations in June. Google’s rate of daily activations, if sustainable, translates into 73 million Android handsets a year.

For comparison, Apple reported the average daily iPhone sales of 90,000 units a day during its last quarter, which scales to about 33 million units annually. Nevertheless, Apple still has a huge lead. The company sold its hundred millionth iOS device last month, which includes iPhones, iPods, and iPads. While Apple makes a bunch of money by selling the phone and services that go with it, free of charge Android benefits Google indirectly, through mobile advertising sales.

Sure, we've already seen a few unannounced Motorola Android phones like the Targa and DROID 3 leak recently, but you wouldn't mind if we added a couple more rumored devices to the pile, right? Right. According to a source speaking with Droid-Life, Moto is currently hard at work at two devices which admittedly may not be revealed until Q1 2012, but when you find out the specs that these handsets are reportedly packing, you'll agree that the wait may be worth it. First up, the full-touch Motorola Bullet (likely a codename):

As with most rumors, you should probably digest this info with a few grains of salt, as it hasn't even been confirmed by multiple sources yet. Still, some of the details do add up. For example, when NVIDIA detailed its upcoming spat of processors earlier this year, the firm mentioned that the Tegra 3, aka Kal-El, could begin appearing in smartphones by the end of 2011. A lot could change between now and Q1 2012, though, and we don't even know which carriers these devices could be headed for yet. When more info does come out, though, you can be sure that we'll let you know.

This was due to a disagreement about new features Google felt were necessary (some related to security of mobile applications). The code which is no longer maintained was deleted in January 2010 from the Linux kernel codebase.

Google announced in April 2010 that they will hire two employees to work with the Linux kernel community.
However, as of May 2011, points of contention still exist between Google and the Linux kernel team: Google tried to push upstream some Android-specific power management code in 2009, which is still rejected today.
Furthermore, Greg Kroah-Hartman, the current Linux kernel maintainer for the -stable branch, said in December 2010 that he was concerned that Google was no longer trying to get their code changes included in mainstream Linux. Some Google Android developers hinted that "the Android team was getting fed up with the process," because they were a small team and had more urgent work to do on Android.

Businesses are rapidly adopting large high definition TVs and monitors for advertising, video conferencing, conference rooms, entertainment and information display, among other uses. We talked with a number of audio visual consultants, system integrators, distributors, vendors and customers and found there was confusion and misunderstanding as to what is better - LCD or Plasma for large screen use for various applications. Understandable, considering the rapidly evolving technologies, numerous choices, the gamut of reviews and the various applications these large screens are being used. We are hoping we can clarify but research the technologies yourself and make the knowledgeable choice.

Quick Introduction to the Technology: Plasma screens use a matrix of plasma gas cells which are charged by electrical voltage to create a picture. LCD screens are made up of liquid crystals placed between two glass plates. Below we compare the two technologies on features important to businesses.

LCD vs. Plasma Comparison: Picture Quality

A number of variables go into picture quality. We will outline them and summarize the findings.

Video Resolution: High resolution is available for both Plasma and LCD screens and resolution is usually comparable for both technologies (1920x1080 is considered as high resolution and available in both Plasma and LCD screens). Lower price models for both Plasma and LCDs have lower resolution and typically for <45a€ screens they are 1366x768 in resolution or lower. Be sure that you compare apples to apples. Overall: A draw between the two technologies.

Data Resolution: Data resolution for LCDs is much better than for Plasma. The number of pixels per square inch on an LCD display is typically higher than any other display technology including Plasma, so LCD monitors are especially good at displaying large amounts of data. For the same reasons, LCD screens will also be better screens for video gaming than Plasma screens. Plasma displays produce a very jaggy image when viewing static images from computer images. Users may want to consider a commercial version plasma if their application calls for a lot of computer use.

Color Accuracy: Plasma color richness and naturalness will prevail in rooms with lower to normal lighting due to higher contrast ratio. LCD screen contrast ratio is relatively lower, but with anti-glare & brightness features of LCD screens, LCDs will be better in ambient light or in brightly lit rooms. As businesses usually work during the day in ambient light, LCDs are more desirable for most business applications.

Viewing Angle: Plasma manufacturers have made much of their 160° viewing angles. However with new LCDs the view angles are 158°. There is not much difference between the two technologies in viewing angle.

Burn-in: There have been concerns with burn-in for Plasma screens especially for static images. However, many Plasma manufacturers have improved their anti-burn in technology. There are no burn-in issues with LCD screens.

This type of tiny laptop usually weighs less than 3 pounds and is an ideal travel mate or third or fourth "home" computer. We found the multi-touch display screen to be fairly responsive as well. Its multi-touch capabilities allowed us to have full control over the interface and quickly choose the feature or application we desired.

One of the best features of the HTC EVO 4G is a kickstand located on the back of the device. The kickstand makes it possible for the device to sit upright on a hard surface. We found the kickstand to be an ideal feature for a multimedia cell phone because it allows you to easily view HD content, including TV shows, videos and pictures without having to constantly hold the device. The kickstand is also a useful feature for desktop use at home or at work.

Call Features/Quality:
One of the outstanding features of the HTC EVO 4G is included in its name; with the HTC EVO, you can enjoy 4G connectivity. Using the 4G technology allows you to access content at speeds up to 10 times faster than a 3G device. This allows you to upload and download at a faster rate and surf the web more quickly as well. However, a drawback to 4G connectivity is that it is not yet available in all markets. Several of the larger markets, specifically in high-population metropolitan areas, do already have 4G networks. Of course, 4G networks will become more available as more cell phone carriers attain 4G connectivity. The HTC EVO 4G multimedia cell phone does not require a 4G network to function because it still possesses 3G capabilities, so it can be used anywhere, not just in 4G networks.

Even with the advanced technology found on this multimedia device, the HTC EVO 4G still has all the basic calling features, including call holding, three-way calling, caller ID and a call timer to show how long a phone call was placed. The HTC EVO 4G is easy to use and simple to navigate. This device uses HTC Sense, which is a custom user interface. This interface allows you to integrate your features and applications, and makes it easier for you to find and use the features that you most frequently need.

Battery Life/Memory:
The HTC EVO 4G features 1GB of internal memory. This is a comparatively small amount, but HTC does not leave their customers without options. They also include an 8GB microSD card that gives you the space you need to store a vast amount of images, videos, contacts, apps and music files. Without the addition of the 8GB microSD card, this multimedia cell phone would have little room to store any photos or videos. It also would be unable to download from the Android Market, which provides Android users with more than 35,000 apps. The Android Market makes it possible for you to find an app for a vast array of functions. In addition, the HTC EVO 4G comes with several pre-loaded Sprint apps such as SprintTV and NASCAR Sprint Cup Mobile.

Additional Features:
This multimedia phone is filled with features that enhance the functionality of this multimedia cell phone and provide you with a vast selection of entertainment options. One feature that makes this device stand apart from other multimedia cell phones is its live video chat feature powered by the application Qik. This app allows you to have a virtual face-to-face conversation with anyone, anywhere as long as you have a Wi-Fi connection. Qik is available for download directly from the Android market, and we found it to be easy to set up and use.

The HTC EVO 4G multimedia phone has two built-in cameras that are designed to allow you to switch between them during a video chat session. There is an 8MP main camera located on the back of the device for taking photos and capturing video. The 1.3MP camera on the front of the device is for video chats, though you can switch to the other camera to share your surroundings with the person with whom you're talking.

The HTC EVO 4G is available though Sprint. Using Sprint’s Hotspot app, we were able to turn our HTC device into a mobile hotspot. Using this multimedia device as a mobile hotspot means that you can use it to provide other devices such as netbooks or laptops with internet connectivity. The only drawback to the hotspot application is that it requires an additional monthly fee.

Just by using your fingers, you can quickly scroll through the list or contacts on the Apple iPhone 4. International Mobile Telecommunications-2000 (IMT — 2000), better known as 3G or 3rd Generation, is a generation of standards for mobile phones and mobile telecommunications services fulfilling specifications by the International Telecommunication Union.[1] Application services include wide-area wireless voice telephone, mobile Internet access, video calls and mobile TV, all in a mobile environment. Compared to the older 2G and 2.5G standards, a 3G system must allow simultaneous use of speech and data services, and provide peak data rates of at least 200 kbit/s according to the IMT-2000 specification. Recent 3G releases, often denoted 3.5G and 3.75G, also provide mobile broadband access of several Mbit/s to laptop computers and smartphones.
The following standards are typically branded 3G:
the UMTS system, first offered in 2001, standardized by 3GPP, used primarily in Europe, Japan, China (however with a different radio interface) and other regions predominated by GSM 2G system infrastructure. The cell phones are typically UMTS and GSM hybrids. Several radio interfaces are offered, sharing the same infrastructure:
The original and most widespread radio interface is called W-CDMA.
The TD-SCDMA radio interface, was commercialised in 2009 and is only offered in China.
The latest UMTS release, HSPA+, can provide peak data rates up to 56 Mbit/s in the downlink in theory (28 Mbit/s in existing services) and 22 Mbit/s in the uplink.
the CDMA2000 system, first offered in 2002, standardized by 3GPP2, used especially in North America and South Korea, sharing infrastructure with the IS-95 2G standard. The above systems and radio interfaces are based on kindred spread spectrum radio transmission technology. While the GSM EDGE standard ("2.9G"), DECT cordless phones and Mobile WiMAX standards formally also fulfill the IMT-2000 requirements and are approved as 3G standards by ITU, these are typically not branded 3G, and are based on completely different technologies.


A new generation of cellular standards has appeared approximately every tenth year since 1G systems were introduced in 1981/1982. Each generation is characterized by new frequency bands, higher data rates and non backwards compatible transmission technology. The first release of the 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE) standard does not completely fulfill the ITU 4G requirements called IMT-Advanced. First release LTE is not backwards compatible with 3G, but is a pre-4G or 3.9G technology, however sometimes branded "4G" by the service providers. WiMAX is another technology verging on or marketed as 4G.

When it comes to owning a decent TV there are a few options, an LCD, Plasma and an LED. However, there will be a new type of TV to add to that list very soon as information has leaked about Sony’s 2010 / 2011 Roadmap of their OLED and XBR Series LCD TVs.

Let us hope that you have some very deep pockets though, as these new range of TVs will not come cheap. According to Engadget, all of the sets that appear on the roadmap have been listed as prototypes, so some of the TVs on the list could be dropped before they get to retail.

Sony already has the 11-inch XEL-1 OLED TV, but this TV is now two years old and LG have bested this with their 15-inch OLED TV, along with a 20-inch version coming in 2010. Sony have the KDL-ZX marked down in their roadmap, but we are unsure what screen size this will be. According to oled-display.net, they believe that this could be the 21-inch version that was on show at the Japan Display Show 2009.

The most exciting news for those of us who cannot afford an OLED TV is the range of new XBR series; this is Sony’s flagship range. The two that stand out for us is the XBR11 LED W-backlit LCD and XBR12 Advanced LED RGB-backlit LCD, screen sizes will be from 32 to 60-inches.

Sony has released several new 3D TV's. The new TVs use shutter glasses to bring the 3D effect in to the living room. Sony has opted to use proprietary high frame rate screens which can provide full HD 3D images.

As with all things 3D at the moment, Sony isn't letting the 3D TV's go for cheap. On top of the high price tag you also need to purchase 3D glasses which cost $150 a pair and a 3D sync transmitter that costs $50. The $50 transmitter will be required on all but the high-end TV which has the feature built in.

The big screen of them all is the Sony Bravia XBR-LX900 series which comes with the mentioned transmitter along with two pairs of active shutter glasses. This particular series comes in two sizes starting with the 52 inch model costing $4000 and the 60 inch version costing $5000.

The models which do not have the built in transmitter include the XBR-HX909 which comes at 52 and 46 inches in size. These cost $4000 and $3500. The KDL-HX800 screens come in three sizes of 55, 46 and 40 inches selling for $3400, $2700 and $2100 although none of these particular screens come with glasses or a transmitter, so depending on how many people will be watching the screen, you might need to spend several hundred more to get 3D fully up and running.

As well as launching a bunch of 3D TV's, Sony also announced an application that can run on your iPhone and soon, Android based device and take control of various media players that Sony is also launching soon.

Sony expects that 3D televisions will make up between 30 percent and 50 percent of all sets it sells in the financial year that begins in April 2012, a senior executive said late last week. The goal further indicates Sony's confidence in 3D entertainment ahead of a roll-out of the technology next year.

Sony first announced its 3D ambitions in early September when President and CEO Howard Stringer said the company planned to launch 3D-capable Bravia TV sets and Blu-ray Disc players as well as adding 3D to the PlayStation 3. Sony's plans for the latter two products are already becoming clear: the Blu-ray Disc Association is working on a 3D disc standard while Sony plans to add 3D to all models of the PlayStation 3 via a firmware update.

On the TV side, perhaps the largest and most important part of the picture, Sony hadn't disclosed many details but now that picture is starting to come into focus.

The 3D-compatible sets will include a small piece of additional hardware that enables them to show 3D content but they'll also work as conventional television sets, said Hiroshi Yoshioka, executive deputy president of Sony and head of the unit that includes its TV business, in an interview. Yoshioka didn't elaborate on the additional hardware but said it would only add a little to the production cost of the TV set.

By far the biggest expense for 3D viewing will be the glasses that are required to produce the illusion of a three-dimensional image. Those could cost up to around US$200 and won't necessarily be bundled with a television. By selling the glasses separately Sony will be able to keep its 3D-compatible sets competitive with other sets while only requiring a higher outlay from customers who want to experience 3D content.

Yoshioka stressed that Sony has yet to determine the premium for 3D-compatible sets and whether it will bundle the glasses or sell them separately. But the TV business is perhaps the most price-sensitive of all of Sony's product areas, particularly in the U.S. market, so the company will likely want to keep additional costs down.

Sony's TV business has been losing money for six years but Stringer committed this month to turning a profit on televisions in the next financial year, which runs from April 2010 to March 2011. Success with 3D will be vital if Sony is to accomplish its goal of grabbing a 20 percent share of the LCD TV market within the next three years.

"It's all up to the contents," said Yoshioka.

Sony's 3D plans revolve around gaming, movies and sports. Sony is already working on gaming with the PlayStation 3 upgrade plans and its movies division, Sony Pictures, is already producing 3D movies. If history is any indicator, sports is an additional area where users are willing to pay a little more money for a better experience.

The company's existing relationship with broadcasters through its movie division and TV production house could serve well in promoting 3D but even if it doesn't there will be a secondary route to 3D-capable sets. Sony is expanding its PlayStation Network service to cover its televisions and will launch a new content delivery service next year that will pump movies, TV shows and other video content directly into Bravia TVs and Blu-ray Disc players from its own servers.

Smaller-scale experiments have already taken place in the U.S., where Sony recently offered its "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" movie to Internet-linked Bravia TVs ahead of the DVD release.

"So far there is a good response," said Yoshioka of the trial.

First thing to consider when buying a digital camera is the megapixel #, we suggest anything with at least 10-megapixels or higher. A 4x zoom lense is also recommended along with a 8GB memory storage card from SanDisk. Remember that just like computers, digital cameras come down in price every 6 months or so. Our only drawback to these smaller digital cameras is that they are often hard to hold. They can be so small and slick that getting a steady hold of them can be difficult. The low end model is the Cyber-shot DSC-T5 Digital Camera offered in Silver/Black for $249.95.

Both Sony and TomTom have come together to roll out a couple of A/V navigation systems in the form of the XNV-770BT and XNV-660BT, where both companies hope that this partnership will result in some of the most advanced car audio, video and navigational technologies
which are currently available in the current market. The Sony XNV-770BT will be a 7-inch widescreen display while the XNV-660BT is a 6.1-inch widescreen display, where both models will ship pre-loaded with TomTom’s extensive map database of both US and Canada roads, coupled with one free year of map upgrades which does not involve any incremental charge. Just to get an idea on how comprehensive TomTom’s maps in the US are, they feature more than 1 million more miles of roads than other GPS brands. Ain’t that comforting?

Apart from that, each system is capable of taking full advantage of several of TomTom’s advanced navigational technologies that you have already come to know and love. Shared features of both devices include a high quality WVGA display that are touted to be one of the brightest and highest contrast screens available at the moment. The XNV-770BT 7-inch display is fully capacitive touch sensitive, while the XNV-660BT will feature several hard keys such as volume and key menu buttons to complement its touchscreen display. There is a rear USB port located on both devices for simple hookup to iPod, iPhone and other digital music players, while full Bluetooth capability ensures you can hook up wirelessly to other compatible devices. Sony also threw in a stylish graphical user interface (GUI) that comprises of large, easy-touch buttons to make life easier for everyone. Audio-wise, you get multi-channel playback with Center Speaker Organizer (CSO), resulting in a virtual 5.1 channel surround sound throughout the car. As for the advanced sound engine (ASE), it will deliver a high-quality, digitally enhanced sound experience while letting you customize the in-car sound field in order to match your tastes. Expect the new XNV-770BT and XNV-660BT A/V navigation systems to be out this November for around $1,300 and $1,000, respectively.

Steven Lobbezoo developed the first commercially available satellite navigation system for cars. It was produced in Berlin from start 1984 to January 1986. Publicly presented first at the Hannover fair in 1985 in Germany, the system was shown in operation on the evening news (item in the Hannover fair) from the first German television channel in that year. It used a modified IBM PC, a large disc for map data and a flat screen, built into the glove compartment. It was called Homer (after the device from a James Bond movie).
Alpine claims to have created the first automotive navigation system in 1981. However, according to the company's own historical timeline, the company claims to have co-developed an analog automotive navigation product called the Electro Gyrocator, working with Honda. This engineering effort was abandoned in 1985. Although there are reports of the Electro Gyrocator being offered as a dealer option on the Honda Accord in 1981, it's not clear whether an actual product was released, whether any customers took delivery of an Electro Gyrocator-equipped Accord, or even whether the unit appeared in any dealer showrooms; Honda's own official history appears to pronounce the Electro Gyrocator as not practical. Honda claims to have created the first navigation system starting in 1983, and culminating with general availability in the 1990 Acura Legend. The original analog Electro Gyrocator system used an accelerometer to navigate using inertial navigation, as the GPS system was not yet generally available. However, it appears from Honda's concessions in their own account of the Electro Gyrocator project that Etak actually trumped Honda's analog effort with a truly practical digital system, albeit one whose effective range of operation was limited by the availability of appropriately digitized street map data.
Progress in digital technology would not stop simply because Honda had turned its attention to analog. In 1985, for example, the U.S. company ETAK introduced its own digital map navigation system. Although the system's effective range-the area of geographical coverage-was limited, the announcement was a dour one for Nakamura and his staff. Therefore, ultimately the development of a practical analog system was shelved. The staff experienced indescribable feelings of disappointment. The development of [Honda's] digital map navigation system resumed in 1987, following a three-year hiatus.

Both Mitsubishi Electric[6] and Pioneer claim to be the first with a GPS-based auto navigation system, in 1990. Also in 1990, a draft patent application was filed within Digital Equipment Co. Ltd. for a multi-function device called PageLink that had real-time maps for use in a car listed as one of its functions.
Magellan, a GPS navigation system manufacturer, claims to have created the first GPS-based vehicle navigation system in the U.S. in 1995.
In 1995, Oldsmobile introduced the first GPS navigation system available in a production car, called GuideStar. There also was an Oldsmobile navigation system available as an option as early as 1994 called the Oldsmobile Navigation/Information System. It was an option on the Oldsmobile Eighty Eight.
However it was not until 2000 that the United States made a more accurate GPS signal available for civilian use.
