Blu-ray players pack a lot of entertainment potential into a small, slim box. They can play high-definition Blu-ray discs, including 3D discs in some cases, as well as regular DVDs and CDs. Most models in our Ratings (available to subscribers) can stream movies and TV episodes from fee-based Internet services such as Netflix and its competitors, along with free content from sites such as YouTube, news and traffic providers, and Internet radio services such as Pandora. Services vary by brand, so check to see whether a player supports those you want.
Wi-Fi capability is built into some models, but for others you need an external adapter, called a dongle. Sometimes the adapter is included with the player; in other cases it’s sold separately for $75 or so. All models have the HDMI connections needed to carry HD signals to your TV, but digital-audio-out or older analog connections vary by model. Check to make sure a player is compatible with your other equipment.
