HTC EVO 4G Review

HTC designed a multimedia cell phone with a great music player, an 8MP (megapixel) primary camera and live video-sharing capabilities. The HTC EVO 4G is our TopTenREVIEWS Silver Award winner for its multimedia capabilities, including the high-resolution camera, additional 1.3MP front-facing camera, HDMI output port and the ability to edit and share HD videos directly from the phone.

Design:
The first thing you'll notice about the appearance of the HTC EVO 4G is the size of the device. It is nearly 5 inches tall and only half an inch thick. It weighs 6 ounces, which makes it one of the heavier multimedia cell phones on the market. Its large size makes it easy to hold onto, and its 4.3-inch display screen is large enough to make it easy for users to view images, send emails and browse the internet. We found the multi-touch display screen to be fairly responsive as well. Its multi-touch capabilities allowed us to have full control over the interface and quickly choose the feature or application we desired.

One of the best features of the HTC EVO 4G is a kickstand located on the back of the device. The kickstand makes it possible for the device to sit upright on a hard surface. We found the kickstand to be an ideal feature for a multimedia cell phone because it allows you to easily view HD content, including TV shows, videos and pictures without having to constantly hold the device. The kickstand is also a useful feature for desktop use at home or at work.

Call Features/Quality:
One of the outstanding features of the HTC EVO 4G is included in its name; with the HTC EVO, you can enjoy 4G connectivity. Using the 4G technology allows you to access content at speeds up to 10 times faster than a 3G device. This allows you to upload and download at a faster rate and surf the web more quickly as well. However, a drawback to 4G connectivity is that it is not yet available in all markets. Several of the larger markets, specifically in high-population metropolitan areas, do already have 4G networks. Of course, 4G networks will become more available as more cell phone carriers attain 4G connectivity. The HTC EVO 4G multimedia cell phone does not require a 4G network to function because it still possesses 3G capabilities, so it can be used anywhere, not just in 4G networks.

Even with the advanced technology found on this multimedia device, the HTC EVO 4G still has all the basic calling features, including call holding, three-way calling, caller ID and a call timer to show how long a phone call was placed. The HTC EVO 4G is easy to use and simple to navigate. This device uses HTC Sense, which is a custom user interface. This interface allows you to integrate your features and applications, and makes it easier for you to find and use the features that you most frequently need.

Battery Life/Memory:
The HTC EVO 4G features 1GB of internal memory. This is a comparatively small amount, but HTC does not leave their customers without options. They also include an 8GB microSD card that gives you the space you need to store a vast amount of images, videos, contacts, apps and music files. Without the addition of the 8GB microSD card, this multimedia cell phone would have little room to store any photos or videos. It also would be unable to download from the Android Market, which provides Android users with more than 35,000 apps. The Android Market makes it possible for you to find an app for a vast array of functions. In addition, the HTC EVO 4G comes with several pre-loaded Sprint apps such as SprintTV and NASCAR Sprint Cup Mobile.

Additional Features:
This multimedia phone is filled with features that enhance the functionality of this multimedia cell phone and provide you with a vast selection of entertainment options. One feature that makes this device stand apart from other multimedia cell phones is its live video chat feature powered by the application Qik. This app allows you to have a virtual face-to-face conversation with anyone, anywhere as long as you have a Wi-Fi connection. Qik is available for download directly from the Android market, and we found it to be easy to set up and use.

The HTC EVO 4G multimedia phone has two built-in cameras that are designed to allow you to switch between them during a video chat session. There is an 8MP main camera located on the back of the device for taking photos and capturing video. The 1.3MP camera on the front of the device is for video chats, though you can switch to the other camera to share your surroundings with the person with whom you're talking.

The HTC EVO 4G is available though Sprint. Using Sprint’s Hotspot app, we were able to turn our HTC device into a mobile hotspot. Using this multimedia device as a mobile hotspot means that you can use it to provide other devices such as netbooks or laptops with internet connectivity. The only drawback to the hotspot application is that it requires an additional monthly fee.
